Litanies are a form of prayer containing a series of petitions with fixed responses. They
originated in the 4th century and were later incorporated into the Mass. One of the most
beautiful features of a litany is the combination of invocations alternating with petitions in a rhythmic, repetitive pattern.
There are 6 litanies approved for public worship: The Litany of the Saints, The Litany of the
Most Precious Blood of Jesus, The Litany of St. Joseph, The Litany of Loreto, The Litany of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and The Litany to the Most Holy Name of Jesus. Others may be used in private devotion.
May the praying of these litanies strengthen your faith and obtain the favors for which you are praying.
